Athletes & CBD

Why is Cbd becoming more popular with Athletes?

CBD, while still a relatively new phenomenon, is gaining popularity within many aspects of life. One area that has seen particular popularity is possibly one of the more surprising – sports. More and more athletes are looking to endorse various CBD products, mainly because of the growing examples of clinical research that indicate CBD may be beneficial for anxiety and pains. There is a lot of research still to be done, but the amount of anecdotal evidence is definitely positive.

Anxiety and its relevance to athletes

Mental health is something that is commonly talked about within modern society, and the measures that are being taken to improve people’s mental health are definitely improving. One of the ways we are told to maintain and improve our mental wellbeing is to stay active. So surely we don’t have to worry about the mental health of athletes, right? Wrong. Athletes are not immune to mental illnesses and are just as likely to suffer from anxiety as anyone else. In fact, the pressures of a sporting environment can actually increase the chances of this. Performance anxiety is much more common than you’d think – and a sudden lack of confidence can greatly impact performance, and more importantly, mental wellbeing. According to a study, one in three athletes are affected by some form of mental health issue, and we think it’s essential to break the stigma surrounding this.

Anxiety and CBD

Research has found that CBD has the ability to interact with our serotonin and CB1 receptors, which are both associated with our endocannabinoid systems. This interaction has been found to result in an increase in the production of serotonin and anandamide, which are both naturally-occurring compounds found in our bodies. The beauty of these compounds is that they are thought to reduce and regulate any anxious or depressive feelings. Particularly when played at a professional level, sport can be extremely anxiety-inducing, even if this goes unnoticed by those on the outside. For this reason, athletes around the world are beginning to take note of the potential anxiety-relieving benefits of CBD.

Sporting regulation and CBD

As more research is being done around the compound, sporting bodies are looking to become more open to the use of CBD. In fact, it was removed from the list of outlawed substances associated with the World Anti-Doping Agency back on 2017. However, while we hope this continues to change in the future, you should be aware that some sporting bodies are still against the use of CBD, so it’s important to double-check.

You should also be aware that any other cannabinoids, for example, cannabis, marijuana and THC are all prohibited. Therefore, you won’t be allowed to use any products that combine CBD and any of these banned substances.

Pain relief and CBD

Anyone who is intensely active will know that it can put a huge strain on your body and muscles. Luckily, research has shown that CBD may have the ability to reduce inflammation and relieve pain, making it especially useful for athletes. When the compound interacts with our endocannabinoid system, it appears to interfere with pain reception, not to mention its anti-inflammatory properties. According to the WHO, it also doesn’t appear to cause dependence issues, making it a much better alternative to various pain-relieving substances such as THC or opioids, which can become addictive.
